What is Fibristal used for?

Fibristal (Ulipristal Acetate) is a prescription medication that is used to treat the signs and symptoms of uterine fibroids such as heavy uterine bleeding, shrinking the fibroid and to reduce pelvic pain. Ulipristal belongs to the class of medications called selective progesterone receptor modulators. This medications works by blocking the effect of progesterone on the endometrium while keeping estrogen levels normal. This medication usually stops menstrual bleeding within days of starting it. The usual adult dose of Ulipristal is 5 mg taken once daily for a 3-month treatment course.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Fibristal?

The common side effects may include acne, constipation, fatigue, hair loss, headache, hot flushes, endometrial thickening, nausea, obesity and sensation of spinning. The serious side effects include:

• Abnormal uterine bleeding;
• Breast pain or discomfort;
• New uterine fibroids;
• Ovarian cysts;
• Pelvic pain;
• Worsening fibroid symptoms

Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Fibristal?

You should not take Fibristal if you are allergic to Ulipristal Acetate or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. Do not take this medication if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant because it may harm to the developing baby. It is unknown if Ulipristal passes into breast milk. There may be an interaction between Fibristal and other medications such as birth control pills, calcium channel blockers, cobicistat, dronedarone, grapefruit juice, modafinil, rifabutin, rifampin, etc.

Fibristal Safety and Storage Information

Fibristal should be stored at room temperature away from light and moisture and out of reach of children and pets. Do not store this medication in the bathroom.
