Hiprex (Methenamine Hippurate) is an antibiotic used to treat or prevent recurring bladder infection in adults and children over the age of 12. Hiprex works by killing bacteria in the body and is generally prescribed when other medications have been tried without success.

Avoid use of Hiprex in patients with gout or if you are allergic to tartrazine. It is unknown how Hiprex might affect an unborn or nursing infant. Avoid citrus fruits, such as oranges, grapefruits, lemons, etc. This medication can decrease perspiration, making you more prone to heat stroke. Drink plenty of fluids while on Hiprex to avoid dehydration. Follow your doctor’s dietary recommendations closely. Ask your doctor before using an antacid and be sure to use only the antacid your doctor recommends, as some may make it harder for your body to absorb Hiprex. There may be an interaction between Hiprex and other medications. Talk to your doctor about the risks.

Hiprex Storage and Safety Information


Hiprex is stored at room temperature and below 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). It should be stored away from heat, moisture and light. Hiprex should be kept away from children and pets.

If an overdose is suspected, seek emergency help or call Poison Control at 1-800-463-5060 immediately if you suspect an overdose.
