What is Opsumit used for?

Opsumit (Macitentan) is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in your lungs). Opsumit works by blocking endothelin, a substance that causes the blood vessels in your lungs to narrow, which restricts blood flow and puts strain on the heart. By blocking excessive production of endothelin, Opsumit helps open these blood vessels and improve pulmonary function. Take Opsumit as prescribed by your doctor. The typical dose is 10 mg once a day. You can take Opsumit with or without food. Swallow the Opsumit tablet whole and do not crush, chew, or break the tablet. While using Opsumit, you may need frequent blood tests.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Opsumit?

Common side effects of Opsumit include stuffy nose, sinus pain, or sore throat, a bladder infection, headache, or flu symptoms. Stop taking Opsumit and contact your doctor immediately if you notice more serious side effects such as pain or burning when you urinate, swelling or rapid weight gain, signs of liver problems (nausea, upper stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay coloured stools, jaundice), or signs of new lung problems (anxiety, sweating, severe shortness of breath, wheezing, gasping for breath, chest pain, cough with foamy mucus, fast or uneven heart rate).
