What is the Accrufer Used for?

Accrufer (Ferric Maltol) is a prescription medication used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia in adults. Anemia occurs when the blood level drops, and iron helps the body produce healthy red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout the body. There are conditions such as excessive bleeding, pregnancy, or consumption of a low iron-containing diet that may cause low iron levels in the blood. Accrufer contains an iron supplement that replaces what is lost in the blood. The active ingredient in Acrrufer is Ferric Maltol. Ferric Maltol belongs to a class of medications called iron supplements. It improves the absorption of iron in the gut by binding tightly to the iron in the region (the ileum) where it is absorbed. As a result, Accrufer medication improves the absorption of the iron, thereby improving your symptoms.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Accrufer?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Black colour stool;
• Constipation;
• Diarrhoea;
• Flatulence;
• Stomach ache

Stop using Accrufer and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, such as:
• Blood in your poo (stool);
• Serious abdominal pain;
• You suddenly become very confused;
• Worsening of your symptoms

This is not a complete list of Accrufer's adverse effects. Please contact your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects persist or worsen.

Are there any precautions or drug interactions for Accrufer?

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Accrufer or have other problems when using Accrufer. This medication should be recommended and prescribed by a doctor after a medical assessment has been done. Accrufer is a capsule that should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before eating, or 2 hours after eating. You should take it with a cup of water or vitamin C juice. It is not recommended to take iron medication with milk, as milk stops the iron from getting absorbed by your gut. Accrufer is often recommended to be taken twice a day. However, your doctor or pharmacist may suggest a dose that is more appropriate for you. To ensure effectiveness, avoid taking an antacid at the same time. To prevent iron deficiency anemia, you'll need to take ferrous fumarate for as long as you're at risk of getting this condition. Most people feel better after taking ferrous fumarate for 1 week, but it may take up to 12 weeks to work fully. You may need medical tests to help determine how long you should use Accrufer. Do not miss your clinic appointment and follow-up. Do not overdose or take more than your prescribed dosage, as this doesn't manage your condition but worsens it. It is best to consult your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen.

You should not use Accrufer and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Hemochromatosis (iron overload);
• Inflammatory bowel disease flare (IBD):
• Intestinal obstruction;
• Kidney problem;
• Liver problems;
• Undergoing a blood transfusion

Discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to get pregnant, and you have recurrent constipation. Pregnancy is a common cause of iron deficiency anemia, and it is essential to treat it promptly. Your doctor or midwife may recommend that you take an iron supplement (ferrous fumarate) in pregnancy. Iron supplements are safe to take during pregnancy, and it is essential to treat low iron levels to ensure you and your baby remain healthy. Discuss with your doctor if the Accrufer capsule is safe for you and the baby. It is also safe to take iron medication during breastfeeding. Iron is a natural part of breast milk. When you take iron as a supplement, it does not affect how much gets into breast milk or how much reaches your baby. If this concerns you, please consult your doctor or midwife.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Accrufer and other drugs, such as mycophenolate, tetracycline, fluoroquinolones, dimercaprol, antacid, milk, and other iron supplements.
