What is Lumigan?

This prescription eye drop is used to treat open-angle glaucoma and other causes of elevated intraocular pressure. It reduces intraocular pressure by increasing the amount of fluid that drains from the eye. It works by regulating the flow of fluid within the eye to maintain normal pressure.

We carry the brand name from India, Canada, and the United Kingdom, manufactured by Allergan. The generic Bimatoprost, also known as Bimat, is manufactured in India by Ajanta Pharma.

Available Strengths and Sizes

Lumigan is available as 0.01% and 0.03% ophthalmic solutions (eye drops), with bottle sizes of 3 ml, 5 ml, and 7.5 ml. The generic version is offered exclusively in a 0.03% strength and a 3 ml size.

• Eye itching (pruritus)
• Eye redness (conjunctival hyperemia)
• Eyelash growth (increased length and thickness)
• Foreign body sensation (feeling like something is in the eye)
• Headache
• Increased eyelid pigmentation (darkening of the skin)

Other Potential Side Effects (less common) - The following list includes side effects that are reported less frequently by individuals:
• Abnormal hair growth around the eye
• Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid)
• Blurred vision
• Eye discharge or tearing
• Eye pain
• Iris color change (increased brown pigmentation)

Contraindications

Do NOT take this medication if any of the following conditions exist:
• Hypersensitivity: A known allergy or hypersensitivity to bimatoprost or any of the solution's inactive ingredients (such as benzalkonium chloride).

Precautions and Warnings

The following conditions warrant a detailed discussion with a healthcare provider before starting this medication, as they may need to be adjusted or avoided to ensure patient safety:
• Aphakia or Pseudophakia: Missing eye lens or a torn artificial lens, both of which increase the risk of macular edema.
• Asthma or COPD: History of respiratory conditions, as prostaglandin analogs may worsen breathing difficulties.
• Eye Inflammation: Active or history of intraocular inflammation, such as uveitis or iritis.
• Kidney or Liver Disease: History of renal or hepatic impairment.

Drug Interactions

Understanding how Lumigan interacts with other substances is crucial for safe and effective treatment. The following medications may need close monitoring or dosage adjustments when taken together.
• Bimatoprost Ophthalmic Products: Using more than one bimatoprost product (such as Latisse for eyelashes and Lumigan for glaucoma) at the same time can reduce the medication's effectiveness and increase the risk of side effects, including changes in eye pressure.
• Other Prostaglandin Analogs: Using this medication in combination with other prostaglandin eye drops (e.g., latanoprost, travoprost) may paradoxically increase intraocular pressure rather than decrease it.

Other Notable Interactions
• Contact Lenses: This drug contains benzalkonium chloride, a preservative that can be absorbed by soft contact lenses and cause discoloration. Lenses should be removed before application and reinserted no sooner than 15 minutes afterward.
• Multiple Eye Medications: If you are using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between doses to ensure proper absorption and prevent "washout."

Safety & Storage Information

This medication should be stored at room temperature, away from light and moisture, and out of reach of children and pets. Ensure the bottle tip does not touch any surface to prevent contamination.
