Heartgard for Dogs (Ivermectin) is used to prevent canine heartworm disease. Heartgard prevents heartworm disease by eliminating the tissue stage of heartworm larvae for a month after infection. Heartgard is not for use in humans. Heartgard contains ivermectin, which is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic that can prevent heartworms. They also contain pyrantel pamoate, which is used to prevent roundworms and hookworms. Heartgard is administered as a beef-flavoured chewable. Heartgard for Dogs should be taken every month. If you miss more than two months of dosage, talk to your veterinarian about whether to continue the medication.
