What is Trintellix used for?


Trintellix is an antidepressant medication used to treat major depressive disorder in adults. It works by treating chemicals in the brain that may be unbalanced. It is a selective serotine reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and serotonin receptor modulator. Taking this medication may improve moods, sleep, appetite, and energy levels in an effort to restore those suffering from depression to a more energetic and balanced daily life. What are the Possible Side Effects of Trintellix?

• Low levels of sodium in your blood;
• If you are pregnant or thinking about become pregnant soon

Trintellix can have adverse reactions to other medications or products. We can’t list them all, but here are some of the most notable ones to be aware of:

• Other antidepressants;
• MAO inhibitors (isocarboxazid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, etc.);
• Aspirin or blood thinners;
• Diuretics (water pills);
• Fentanyl;
• Tramadol;
• Quinidine;
• Rifampin;
• St. John’s wort;
• Tryptophan;
• “Triptan” migraine headache medicines (sumatriptan, etc.);
• Anxiety or mental illness medications (buspirone, lithium, etc.);
• Antiseizure medications (carbamazepine, phenytoin, etc.)

Be sure to talk to your doctor if you are using any of the above medications, and any of those you start or stop while on Trintellix.

Trintellix Storage and Safety Information


Store Trintellix at room temperature away from extreme heat, light, and moisture.

Do not take this medication within 14 days after taking an MAO inhibitor – as a dangerous drug interaction could occur. Wait at least 21 days to take an MAO inhibitor after discontinuing Trintellix.

Some younger adults may have suicidal thoughts after taking their first antidepressant. Be aware of your moods, tendencies, and behaviors. Be sure to talk to your doctors during your regular progress visits.

Taking this medication during pregnancy could cause life-threatening withdrawal symptoms, serious lung problems, or other complications for the newborn. Be sure to talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, nursing, or considering pregnancy. Do not start or stop this medicine without your doctor’s advice, as they can help you decide if the benefit of continuing the treatment outweighs the risks to baby.

You should not breastfeed while on this medication.

It’s possible for Trintellix to impair your thinking or reactions. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.

Avoid drinking alcohol while on this medication.

Taking NSAIDs with Trintellix may cause you to bruise or bleed more easily. Be sure to talk to your doctor before taking any nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Seek emergency help or call Poison Control at 1-800-463-5060 immediately if you suspect an overdose.

This medication is not recommended for anyone younger than 18.
