Are There Alternative Names for the Brand and Generic Xalatan?

Xalatan is manufactured by Pfizer and comes from Canada. It contains the active ingredient as Latanoprost. The generic form of Xalatan is Latanoprost and it is available from Canada also called Sandoz Latanoprost manufactured by Sandoz.

What Dosages and Forms is Xalatan available in?

Xalatan is supplied in a 2.5 mL plastic ophthalmic dispenser bottle. Each bottle contains 2.5 mL of solution, approximately 80 drops. Each millilitre (mL) contains 50 micrograms of latanoprost.

What is Xalatan used for?

Xalatan is used for the treatment of high pressure in the eye in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. These conditions may eventually affect your eye sight. Xalatan is a solution for use only in the eyes. It belongs to a group of medicines called prostaglandins, and helps to lower the pressure within the eye by increasing the natural outflow of fluid from inside the eye. Xalatan should be used exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Usual dose is one drop in the affected eye once daily in the evening. Do not allow the dropper tip of the bottle to touch the eye or other surrounding structures, because this could contaminate the tip with common bacteria known to cause eye infections. Serious damage to the eye with subsequent loss of vision may result if you use eye drop solutions that have become contaminated.

What Are The Possible Side Effects of Xalatan?

Some of the common side effects of Xalatan may include change in the eye color, thicker and longer eye lashes, feeling of something in the eye, redness in eye, blurred vision, dizziness, headache, eye pain, visual sensitivity to light. Some of the serious side effects of these eye drops include blurred vision, color perception changes, infection and infestations of the eye, asthma, difficulty breathing, and severe skin reactions. These are not all the possible side effects of Xalatan. In case of any unexpected effect, consult your healthcare professional immediately.

Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Xalatan?

You may find that your vision is blurred for a short time just after you use Xalatan. Do not drive or use machines until your vision is clear.

Xalatan contains a preservative that may be absorbed by contact lenses and stains them a brown color. Do not use Xalatan while wearing contact lenses. Remove your contact lenses before applying Xalatan and wait at least 15 minutes after using the drops before putting your lenses back in.

Do not use Xalatan if you are allergic to latanoprost or any other ingredients in the medication.

Xalatan is not recommended for use in children.
Before taking Xalatan, inform your doctor if you:

• Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed
• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
• Are sensitive to light
• Are using any other eye drops or taking any other medication
• Have or had eye inflammation such as uveitis, iritis
• Have or had inflammation of the cornea
• Have liver or kidney problems

Drug interactions

It is important to tell your healthcare professional about all other medicines that you have taken recently including any kind of supplements and non-prescription drugs, especially if you are taking other drugs of the same class. Studies have shown that precipitation occurs when eye drops containing thimerosal are mixed with Xalatan. If such drugs are used, they should be administered with an interval of at least 5 minutes between applications. Only on your doctor’s advice, Xalatan may be used concomitantly with other topical ophthalmic products to further lower intraocular pressure. If more than one topical ophthalmic drug is being used, the drugs should be administered at least 5 minutes apart.

Xalatan Storage and Safety Information

Before opening the bottle, store Xalatan in the fridge between 2-8°C, out of direct light. Once the bottle is opened, Xalatan may be stored at room temperature up to 25°C. Once opened Xalatan can be stored at room temperature up to 25C for 6 weeks. Keep out of reach and sight of children.
