Generic Hydrocortisone is available in the strength of 2 %/150 ml and 2.5 %/150 ml topical lotion.

What is Ala-Cort Used for?

Ala-Cort (Hydrocortisone) is a prescription lotion used to treat symptoms of eczema, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, heat rash, itching of the genitals and anal region, insect bites, and stings. Hydrocortisone lotion reduces swelling, itching, and irritation associated with these conditions. It also treats low cortisol levels caused by adrenal gland diseases. The active ingredient in Ala-Cort is Hydrocortisone. Hydrocortisone belongs to the class of drugs called topical corticosteroids. It works by blocking the action of certain proteins that promote swelling and inflammation. As a result, Hydrocortisone reduces fibroblast proliferation, collagen deposition, and subsequent scar tissue formation.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Ala-Cort?

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Hydrocortisone or have a skin infection that may prevent you from applying the lotion. Hydrocortisone comes as a lotion for use on the skin. You should apply the lotion as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Apply it at around the same time every day. Do not apply more or less of it or more often than your doctor prescribes. Do not apply it to other areas of your body or use it to treat different skin conditions unless directed by your doctor. Do not bandage the treated area unless your doctor tells you you should. If you have psoriasis, your doctor may recommend an occlusive dressing. You should inform your doctor if there is no improvement in your symptoms after two weeks of regular use of Hydrocortisone lotion.

You should not take Ala-Cort and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Cushing syndrome (a condition that causes excess corticosteroid hormone);
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Serious skin infections

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant, or breastfeed a baby. Steroid cream like Hydrocortisone is not recommended during pregnancy unless prescribed and monitored by a dermatologist. Likewise, you should consult your doctor before using Hydrocortisone lotion while breastfeeding a baby. As a precaution, if you're breastfeeding, wash off any cream you put on your breasts before feeding your baby.
Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. For example, there may be a drug interaction between Ala-Cort and other drugs, such as:
• Antidiabetic such as metformin, and insulin;
• Amiodarone;
• Diclofenac;
• Other steroids cream
