What is Alecensa Used for?
Alecensa (Alectinib Hydrochloride) is a prescription medication used to
treat adults with anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), including as a follow-up treatment after tumor removal surgery and for cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. Some lung cancers carry an abnormal ALK gene that signals tumor cells to grow and divide. The active ingredient in Alecensa is Alectinib Hydrochloride. Alectinib belongs to a class of drugs called ALK inhibitors, or tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). It blocks the abnormal ALK protein, stopping the signals that drive the growth and spread of ALK-positive cancer cells, including those that have spread to the brain.
What are the Possible Side Effects of Alecensa?
If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Constipation;
• Cough;
• Fatigue;
• Muscle or joint pain (myalgia);
• Rash;
• Swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or face (edema).
Stop using Alecensa and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, such as:

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Alecensa or have other problems when using Alecensa. Take it twice daily with food, swallowing each capsule whole; do not open, dissolve, crush, or split the capsules. If you vomit after taking a dose, do not take an extra dose; wait and take your next dose at the usual time. Because Alecensa can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen, protective clothing, and lip balm with sun protection while taking this medication and for at least 7 days after your last dose. Your doctor will order regular blood tests to check your liver function, kidney function, blood cell counts, heart rate, and muscle enzyme levels while you are taking Alecensa.
You should not use Alecensa and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• A slow heart rate or other heart rhythm problems;
• Liver disease;
• Kidney disease;
• Lung or breathing problems;
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as Alecensa can cause harm to an unborn baby. Females who can become pregnant should use effective contraception during treatment and for 5 weeks after the final dose; males with partners who can become pregnant should use effective contraception during treatment and for 3 months after the final dose.
