Antabuse (Disulfiram) is a prescription medication that is used in people who are addicted to alcohol. Disulfiram works by blocking an enzyme that is involved in metabolizing the intake of alcohol. This medication helps to keep you from drinking because of the bad reaction you get if you consume alcohol while you are taking Antabuse.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Antabuse?

The common side effects may include acne, drowsiness, headache, metallic or garlic like taste. The serious side effects may include:

• Confusion;
• Decrease in sexual ability;
• Mental or mood changes;
• Numbness or tingling of arms and legs;

Are there any Precautions or Drug Interactions for Antabuse?

You should not use Antabuse if you are allergic to Disulfiram or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking the medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. Avoid all beverages that contain alcohol or alcohol containing products while you are using this medication. This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Antabuse should not be used with anything that contains alcohol such as cough, cold syrups and aftershave. This medication can increase the side effects of caffeine. Antabuse should never be given to a patient when they are in a state of alcohol intoxication, or without their full knowledge. Do not take Antabuse for at least 12 hours after drinking alcohol or taking drugs that have alcohol in them. Antabuse may interact with many medications such as tinidazole, pheytoin, metronidazole, benznidazole and drugs containing alcohol.

Antabuse Safety and Storage Information

Antabuse should be stored at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F or 20-25 degrees C away from light and moisture and out of reach of children and pets. This medication should not be stored in the bathroom.
