What Is Aricept Used For?

Aricept belongs to a class of drugs known as cholinesterase inhibitors and is used for symptomatic treatment of mild, moderate and severe Alzheimer’s disease. In Alzheimer’s disease patients, there is a decrease in the function of neurotransmitter system which uses acetylcholine as its chemical messenger. Aricept acts by inhibiting an enzyme called as acetylcholinesterase, leading to an increase in the level of acetylcholine in the brain. This may help relieve the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Aricept may take as long as 12 weeks to begin working, and patient response may vary. Take the medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take Aricept once daily, at the same time everyday in the morning or evening. The medication can be taken with or without food and should be swallowed whole with water.

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Aricept?

Most common side effects caused by Aricept are include nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, vomiting, muscle cramps, fatigue, anorexia and fainting. Some of the serious side effects of this medication include combination of muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, or joint pain accompanied by a fever or very dark urine that you cannot explain, Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (a state of high fever, muscle stiffness, irregular blood pressure, pulse and or heartbeats, altered consciousness).
