What is Benlysta used for?
Benlysta is a prescription drug and is used to treat adults with
lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus, SLE) who are also receiving other medicines for lupus. This medication is not approved for use in children less than 18 years old. It is not known if Benlysta is safe and effective in people with severe active lupus nephritis or severe central nervous system lupus. It is not known if Benlysta is effective in people of black ethnicity. Benlysta contains belimumab which belongs to a group of drugs called monoclonal antibodies. SLE is a disease of the immune system (the body system that fights infection). People with active lupus often have high levels of a protein called BLyS in their blood. Benlysta binds to BLyS and limits the activity of BLyS. The recommended dose is 200 mg once a week, injected under your skin on the same day each week. Benlysta comes in an autoinjector.
