Cortrosyn is used as part of a medical test ACTH stimulation test. This test can help your doctor diagnose adrenal gland disorders such as Addison's disease, Cushing syndrome, and hypopituitarism. Cosyntropin is a man-made form of a hormone called adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). This hormone is normally produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. It stimulates the adrenal glands to release the hormone cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones help your body respond to stress and it also supports many systems of the body including circulation, metobolism, immunity, and the nervous system. Cortrosyn is taken by injection intramuscularly or as a direct intravenous infusion for 4-8 hours.
