What is Diabeta used for?


Diabeta (Glyburide) is an oral diabetes medicine that helps control blood sugar levels. Diabeta is used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. This medicine is not for treating type 1 diabetes. Diabeta works by stimulating the release of insulin from the pancreas, which is the chemical needed for regulating blood sugar. Diabeta also acts as a mild diuretic, and helps the kidneys expel more water, and in turn expel more sugar from the blood. Take Diabeta as directed. Diabeta is typically taken with breakfast or the first main meal of the day. Your blood sugar will need to be checked often, and you may need other blood tests at your doctor’s office. What Are the Possible Side Effects of Diabeta?


Common side effects of Diabeta include low blood sugar, nausea, heartburn, decreased appetite, muscle or joint pain, blurred vision, or mild rash or skin redness. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice more serious side effects such as pale skin, easy bruising, or bleeding, fever, chills, sore throat, or mouth sores, severe skin rash, redness or itching, signs of liver problems (dark urine, jaundice, clay-colored stools, upper stomach pain), or signs of low levels of sodium in the body (headache, confusion, slurred speech, severe weakness, vomiting).

Avoid drinking alcohol. It lowers blood sugar and may interfere with your diabetes treatment.

You should not use Diabeta if you are allergic to it, or if:

• you are being treated with bosentan (Tracleer);
• you have type 1 diabetes; or
• you have diabetic ketoacidosis (call your doctor for treatment).

To make sure Diabeta is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:

• hemolytic anemia (a lack of red blood cells);
• an enzyme deficiency called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD);
• a nerve disorder affecting bodily functions;
• liver or kidney disease; or
• an allergy to sulfa drugs.

Tell your doctor about any medications, supplements, or vitamins you are currently taking or have recently taken. Diabeta may interact with:

• Levaquin
• Micronase
• Colesevelam
