What Dosages and Forms are Emla Patch Available in?

Emla Patch is available in the strength of 2.5 %/2.5 % patches.

What is Emla Patch Used for?

Emla Patch (Lidocaine/Prilocaine) is an over-the-counter medicine used as topical anesthesia for common needle procedures (blood sampling, vaccination) and superficial skin surgery (superficial split skin grafting). The active ingredients in Emla Patch are Lidocaine and Prilocaine. Both Lidocaine and Prilocaine belong to the class of medicine called local anesthesia. Emla Patch works by temporarily numbing the skin and surrounding area. These local anesthetics are combined with special agents which allow the products to pass through the skin. Once through the skin, the numbing effect allows minor surgical procedures to be performed with a complete or significant reduction in pain.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Emla Patch?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Lightening of the skin;
• Redness of the skin;
• Swelling;
• Tingling and burning sensation

If any of the following happen, remove EMLA and tell your doctor immediately or go to casualty at your nearest hospital.
• A rash at a spot where the patch is not being used;
• Areas of skin becoming blue;
• Blurred vision;
• Difficulty breathing;
• Dizziness;
• Hand tremors

This is not a complete list of the adverse effect of Emla Patch. Kindly reach out to your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or get worse.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Emla Patch?

Before using Emla Patch, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to lidocaine, prilocaine, or other amide anesthetics (such as bupivacaine). Emla Patch should not be used on broken skin. Except for leg ulcers, do not use Emla Patch on areas with an infection, skin rash, cuts, grazes, or other open wounds. If any of these problems are present, check with your doctor or pharmacist before using Emla Patch. The most important thing to do is to be sure that you apply the Emla patch at least one hour before the procedure, except for skin grafting, where a two-hour application time is required. Tell your doctor exactly when you put Emla Patch on, and they will decide when the procedure can take place.

Ask your doctor how to apply the patch or follow the following steps;
• Make sure that the area of the skin to be anesthetized is clean and dry;
• To open the patch, pull the layers apart. Take hold of the aluminum flap and peel the tan-colored patch off the aluminum paper backing. Do not touch the white round pad of Emla medication;
• Apply the Emla patch so that the white round pad covers the area to be treated. Press firmly around the edges of the patch to make sure the patch sticks to the skin;
• Press gently on the center of the patch to make sure the pad of Emla's medication touches the skin;
• Use a pen to write when you applied the patch on the dressing. Take care that the patch does not come off during the hour wait time

You should not take Emla Patch and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver problems;
• Methemoglobinemia;
Mollusca contagiosa;
• Skin problems (such as infection, dermatitis, eczema)

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to get pregnant or breastfeeding a baby. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. It would be best if you discussed the risks and benefits with your doctor. Lidocaine passes into breast milk. It is unknown if prilocaine passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. The patch should not be used on premature babies.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements to prevent drug interactions, which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. There may be a drug interaction between Emla Patch and other drugs such as:
• A sulphonamides antibiotic, e.g., sulfatrimoxazole;
• Medicines used to treat irregular heartbeat such as amiodarone;
• Other local anesthetics
