What is the Ferofit Used for?


Ferofit (Ferrous Fumarate - 100mg of Elemental Iron) is an over-the-counter medication used to treat iron deficiency anemia, folic acid deficiency, peripheral neuropathy (feeling of tingling sensations due to nerve damage) and other related symptoms. Anemia is a condition in which the body does not have enough red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to various body tissues. Iron is usually found in foods and is necessary for the development of healthy red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body. The active ingredient in Ferofit is a type of Iron called Ferrous fumarate. Ferofit is a multivitamin and it works by replenishing the body with Iron needed for normal red blood cells.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Ferofit?

• Bitter taste in the mouth;
• Constipation;
• Nausea and vomiting;
• Passage of dark stool;

Ferofit is a tablet and it should be taken orally with a full glass of water. Ferrous fumarate works best when taken on an empty stomach, at least an hour before eating and 2 hours after eating. You can stop taking the pills three months after the anemia has been corrected. You should not take the tablets for more than six months. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Anemia in pregnancy is a serious condition and should be treated immediately. Iron supplements are safe to take in pregnancy and it is essential that low iron levels are treated so that you and your baby stay healthy. Iron is also an integral component of breast milk and taking iron supplement does not affect how much Iron get to your baby. If your baby is diagnosed with low iron levels, the baby will be treated separately. Ferofit is not often recommended for use in children without talking to your doctor.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Ferrous fumarate and other drugs, such as levothyroxine, neomycin, aminosalicylic acid, laxatives cimetidine, antacids and colchicine.
