What Dosages and Forms Are Hepsera Available in?

The brand Hepsera and its generic Adefovir Dipvoxil are available in a strength of 10 mg tablets.

What is Hepsera Used for?

Hepsera (Adefovir Dipvoxil) is a prescription medicine used to treat chronic viral infection of the liver (hepatitis B and C) in people above the age of 12 years who are affected by the virus. The active ingredient in Hepsera is Adefovir Dipvoxil. Adefovir Dipvoxil belongs to the class of medication called nucleotide analog (nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors). It works by slowing the growth of the virus, helping to lower the amount of virus in the body of affected persons. Lowering the amount of virus in the body may reduce the chance of developing cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer. It would be best to know that Hepsera is not a cure for hepatitis B or Hepatitis C virus infection and does not prevent the spread of the virus to others.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Hepsera?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Abnormal liver function;

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Hepsera?

Before taking Adefovir, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. Hepsera comes as a tablet, and it should be taken by mouth with a cup of water. It is usually taken once a day with or without food. Take the Hepsera tablet at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Adefovir exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Inform your doctor if you are infected by HIV/AIDs. Your doctor will test you for HIV to ensure you receive appropriate treatment. If you get or have an HIV infection that is not being treated with medication, adefovir Dipvoxil may cause your HIV infection to become untreatable with the usual HIV drugs (development of HIV resistance). Tell your doctor right away of any new symptoms that occur during or after treatment.

You should not take Hepsera and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• HIV infection;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including liver cirrhosis and liver transplant)

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant when treating liver disease with Hepsera medication. During pregnancy, Adefovir tablets should be used only when needed and prescribed by your doctor. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements to prevent drug interactions, which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Hepsera and other drugs such as:
Atripla;
• Eviplera;
• Genvoya
• Stribild;
• Truvada;
• Viread
