What is Ismo used for?

Ismo (Isosorbide-5-mononitrate) belongs to a group of medicines called nitrates. The nitrates make the arteries of the heart dilate, increasing the blood supply to the heart muscle. This medication works by relaxing and widening blood vessels so blood can flow more easily to the heart. Ismo is used to treat angina which is a type of chest pain (coronary heart disease) caused when your heart muscle does not get enough blood supply. Ismo will help to reduce the number of your episodes of angina, reduce the severity of your attacks of angina, and reduce the chances of heart failure. Ismo will not relieve chest pain once it occurs. This medication is not intended to be taken just before physical activities such as exercise or sexual intercourse to prevent chest pain. Always take Ismo exactly as your doctor has told you. You should swallow the tablets whole, with a drink of water. Angina needs long-term treatment. Keep taking Ismo unless your doctor tells you to stop.

What Are The Possible Side Effects of Ismo?

Some of the common side effects of Ismo may include headache, dizziness, skin warmth or redness, tingling under your skin, nausea, vomiting, constipation, hot flashes, dry mouth, diarrhea, or pain or stiffness in joints or muscles. Some serious side effects include irregular heart rates, lightheadedness or fainting, chest pain, and shortness of breath. These are not all the possible side effects of Ismo. In case of any unexpected effect, consult your healthcare professional immediately.
