What is Isoniazid Used for?

Isoniazid (Isoniazid) is a prescription antibiotic medicine used with other antitubercular drugs to treat tuberculosis (TB) and to prevent the reactivation of tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is a mycobacterial severe infection that affects the lungs and sometimes other parts of the body. Isoniazid is also used with other drugs to treat people with latent (resting or nongrowing) TB, including those in close contact with people who have active TB, a positive tuberculin skin test, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and those with pulmonary fibrosis (scarring of the lungs with an unknown cause). Isoniazid is the active ingredient in this medication. Isoniazid belongs to the class of drugs called antituberculosis agents. It works by killing the bacteria that cause tuberculosis.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Isoniazid?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Loss of appetite;
• Nausea and vomiting;
• Numbness or tingling sensation of hands and leg;
• Stomach pain;
• Sudden onset of slurred speech;
• Weakness;

Stop using Isoniazid and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Blurred vision or loss of vision, with or without eye pain;
• Recurrent infection such as sore throat (agranulocytosis);
• Seizure disorder;
• Worsening symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, chronic cough, and unintended weight loss

The above is a partial list of the adverse effects of Isoniazid. If any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or worsen, please contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Isoniazid?

Before using Isoniazid, inform your doctor if you have had any unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or other medicines. Also, tell your doctor if you have any other types of allergies, such as allergies to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals. Isoniazid is a tablet, and it should be taken with other antitubercular medication, usually once daily. Follow your prescription label carefully, and do not skip your medication. Isoniazid is prescribed for the long term; hence, you may have to take it every day for as long as six months to 2 years. If your symptoms do not improve within 2 to 3 weeks, or if they become worse, check with your doctor. Your doctor may prescribe vitamin B6 in addition to your medication to limit the side effects of Isoniazid. It is essential to be regular with clinic visits to check your progress with the treatment. Inform your doctor if your condition gets worse.

You should not take Isoniazid and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Abdominal tuberculosis;
• Heart diseases;
• HIV/AIDs or weakened immune system;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection)

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or nursing a child. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This product passes into breast milk but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Isoniazid and other drugs, such as:
• Cobimetinib;
• Conivaptan;
• Eliglustat;
Lovastatin;
• Lurasidone;
• Pacritinib;
• Venetoclax;
• Voclosporin
