Isoptin Information

Isoptin (Verapamil SR) is used treat hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain), and other heart rhythm disorders. Verapamil SR is a calcium channel blocker. It works by relaxing the muscles in the heart and blood vessels to allow blood to flow more easily and reduce blood pressure.

Some common side effects of Isoptin may include:

• Constipation;

• Headache;

• Dizziness; or

• Abnormal liver function tests

You should not take Isoptin if you are allergic to Verapamil SR or if you have any serious heart condition. If you take disopyramide, avoid taking it within 48 hours before, or 24 hours after, taking Isoptin. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history, and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. Do not drink alcohol while on this medication, as it can further lower your blood pressure. Avoid Grapefruit and grapefruit juice, as they may interact with Isoptin and lead to dangerous side effects. It is not known how this medication can affect an unborn baby, but it can pass through breast milk and cause harm. Do not breastfeed while on this medication.
