What Dosages and Forms are Myambutol Available in?

What is Myambutol Used for?

Myambutol (Ethambutol) is a prescription medication used to treat tuberculosis and prevent infected individuals from transmitting it to others. It is usually given together with at least one other tuberculosis medicine. The active ingredient in the Myambutol tablet is Ethambutol. Ethambutol belongs to the class of medications called Antitubercular Agents. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Ethambutol does not work for viral infections (common cold, flu).

What are the Possible Side Effects of Myambutol?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
Acute gout;
• Abdominal pain;
• Confusion or disorientation;
• Headache;
• Loss of appetite;
• Malaise,
• Visual problem (optic neuritis);
• Rash

Stop using Myambutol and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Blurred vision;
• Confusion or hallucination;
• Difficulty producing urine;
• Easy bruising or bleeding (nose bleeding, bleeding gums);
• New or worsening cough with fever, trouble breathing;
• Sudden changes in vision;
• The tingling sensation of your hands or feet;
• Worsening of sight or loss of color vision

This is not a complete list of the adverse effect of Myambutol. Kindly reach out to your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or get worse.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Myambutol?

Before taking the Myambutol tablet, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Ethambutol or other drugs. You may not be able to take Ethambutol if you have an eye condition called optic neuritis (inflammation of nerve fibers behind your eyes). Your doctor will decide if this treatment is proper if you have an eye disorder. Ethambutol tablets should be taken by mouth. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take the tablet exactly as directed. It would be best if you did not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

You should continue to take this medication with other prescribed tuberculosis medication until the total prescribed dose has finished, even if symptoms disappear. Stopping the medication too early or skipping doses may allow the bacteria to continue to grow, resulting in a return of the infection and causing it to be more challenging to treat (resistant).

You should not take Myambutol and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Cataracts;
• Eye problems caused by diabetes;
• Gout;
• Inflammatory eye problems such as uveitis or iritis;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while taking Ethambutol, call your doctor. Myambutol is excreted into breast milk. The use of Myambutol should be considered if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the infant. If you have HIV disease, do not breastfeed because breast milk can transmit HIV
Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions, which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. There may be a drug interaction between Myambutol and other drugs, such as:
• Allopurinol;
• Febuxostat;
• Hydroxide-containing antacids such as Alamag Plus;
• Probenecid
