What Is Nasonex Used For?


Nasonex is a topical corticosteroid which is used to reduce inflammation and is prescribed for the treatment of following conditions in children and adolescents:

• Nasal congestion associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis (also called as hay fever with symptoms such as nose congestion, runny nose, itching and sneezing) in patients 2 years age and older

• Prophylaxis of seasonal allergic rhinitis in patients 12 years age and older

• Treatment of Nasal Polyps (small growths on the lining of the nose that usually

• affect both nostrils) in patients 18 years age and older

• As an adjunctive treatment to antibiotics for treatment of acute rhinosinusitis, with signs of bacterial infection in patients 12 years age and older

• Mild to moderate uncomplicated acute rhinosinusitis, with no signs of bacterial infection in patients 12 years age and older

Nasonex is a topical glucocorticosteroid and has anti-inflammatory action. The medication has a wide range of effects on multiple cells such as eosinophils, mast cells, neutrophils, macrophages and lymphocytes as well as some mediators such as histamine involved in inflammation.

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Nasonex?


Most common side effects of treatment with Nasonex include headache, nose-bleeds, burning sensation or irritation inside the nose, sneezing and sore throat. Taste and smell disturbances have also been reported. Some less common side effects include swelling in lymph nodes, vision changes, eye tearing, dry eyes, inflammation or infection in eyes, ear aches, ringing in ears, pain in stomach, diarrhea, nausea tongue and tooth disorders, dryness in mouth, allergy aggravation, swelling of body including face, fever, flu-like symptoms, thirst, cold sore, infections, muscle/joint pain, tremor, dizziness, migraine, depression, fatigue, voice loss, nightmares, bronchitis, shortness of breath, acne, high blood pressure, wheezing and nasal septum perforation. Some rare side effects include allergic reaction, irregular heartbeats, chest pain, blurred vision, increased eye pressure, eye pain and distorted vision. Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Nasonex?


There are no adequate studies to establish the safety of Nasonex in pregnant or nursing women. As with other nasal corticosteroid preparations, Nasonex should be used in pregnant or nursing women only when the potential benefits outweigh the risks to the mother, fetus or infants. Infants born of mothers who have been taking nasal corticosteroids in pregnancy should be carefully watched for hypoadrenalism.

Do not take Nasonex if you:

• Have nose infection (yellow/green discharge from the nose) that is not being treated

• Had recent operation or injury on your nose. In this case, you will have to wait until healing before using Nasonex

• Have been diagnosed with tuberculosis and is not being treated

• Suffer from untreated fungal, bacterial or systemic viral infections

• Have untreated herpes simplex virus infection of the eye

Before taking Nasonex always talk to your health care professional in case you:

• Sores in the nose

• Active or previous tuberculosis

• Fungal, bacterial or viral infection

• Herpes simplex virus infection of the eye

In case you develop an infection in the nose after starting Nasonex (normal clear discharge from the nose turns into green/yellow discharge), contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
