What is NeoVisc Used for?

NeoVisc (Sodium Hyaluronate) is a prescription medicine used to relieve pain in Osteoarthritis (OA) of the kneel in patients who have failed to respond adequately to conservative non-pharmacologic therapy or simple analgesics. The active ingredient in NeoVisc is Sodium Hyaluronate. Sodium Hyaluronate belongs to the group of drugs called intra-Articular Agents (Rheumatologic). The injection consists of Hyaluronate, which is naturally found in the synovial fluid and cartilage of healthy knee joints. NeoVisc replaces the natural lubricating and shock-absorbing properties of the joint fluid. The injections provide safe and effective relief from the pain and disability associated with knee osteoarthritis and can be used with physiotherapy.

What are the Possible Side Effects of NeoVisc?

The common side effects of NeoVisc injection may include:
• Bruising;
• Back pain;
• Itching, numbness, or tingling;
• Joint pain;
• Joint Stiffness;
• Lumps/bumps at the joint;
• Skin discoloration;
• Swelling of the joint;
• Tenderness

This is not the complete list of possible side effects of this injection. Kindly reach out to your doctor if any above side becomes severe or lasts longer.

Stop using NeoVisc and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Bleeding;
• Increased knee pain;
• Injection site pain;
• Signs of infection (warmth, swelling, redness) around your knee

This is not a complete list of the adverse effect of NeoVisc. Kindly reach out to your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or get worse.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for NeoVisc?

You should not receive a NeoVisc injection if you are allergic to it. You had a previous allergic reaction to hyaluronic acid or if you have a bleeding disorder or an infection in your knee or the skin around your knee. You should not engage in excessive or strenuous activity for the first 24 hours after your injection. Follow your doctor's instructions. If you are overweight, lose weight to reduce pressure on your joints. If your doctor has recommended exercises, do them faithfully (after waiting 24 hours after your injection). Avoid strenuous activity or prolonged (>1 hr.) weight-bearing activities (e.g., running, tennis) within 48 hours following injection. If you experience signs of your osteoarthritis symptoms reappearing after treatment, call your doctor to discuss your treatment plan. As with any injection, there may be temporary pain at the injection site. Contact your doctor immediately if the injected joint remains painful for more than 12 hours or becomes swollen. To prevent pain and swelling, your doctor may recommend resting your knee or applying ice for a short time after your injection.

You should not receive NeoVisc injection and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Active synovitis;
• A bleeding or blood clotting disorder such as hemophilia;
• Hypersensitive to the component of this injection;
• You have an infection or skin infection in the area of the injection site

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while taking NeoVisc prefilled injection. It is not known whether NeoVisc will harm an unborn baby. It is unknown whether Sodium hyaluronate passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby. NeoVisc is not approved for use by anyone younger than 21 years old. Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements to prevent drug interactions, which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. However, there are currently no known drug contraindications with Durolane. This means that there are currently no other medications that contraindicate its use in osteoarthritis patients.
