What is Nexavar used for?


Nexavar (Sorafenib) is a cancer medication that is used to treat liver cancer that cannot be removed by surgery. It is also used to treat thyroid cancer or a type of kidney cancer called advanced renal cell carcinoma. Sorafenib belongs to a group of medications called multikinase inhibitors. It works by interfering with the enzymes that are needed by the cancer cells to grow and spread. This slows down the growth of cancer cells and delays the growth of new blood vessels that lead to the cancer cells.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Nexavar?


The common side effects may include acne, diarrhea, dry mouth, dry skin, hoarseness, loss of appetite, patchy hair loss or thinning and feeling tired. The serious side effects may include:

• Bone or muscle pain;
• Depression;
• Easy bruising or bleeding;
• Headache;
• Numbness of the hands and feet;
• Shortness of breath;
• Swollen hands and ankles

Are there any Precautions or Drug Interactions for Nexavar?


You should not take Nexavar if you are allergic to Sorafenib or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. Sorafenib may cause a condition that affects the heart rhythm. This medication should not be handled by women who are pregnant as it can be absorbed through the skin and lungs and may harm an unborn baby. Sorafenib should not be recommended for use during pregnancy. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breast-feeding a baby. There may be an interaction between Sorafenib and other medications such as acetaminophen, alfuzosin, amantadine, bupropion, carbamazepine, carvedilol, celecoxib, domperidone, tacrolimus, tamoxifen, warfarin, etc.

Nexavar should be stored at room temperature away from light and moisture and out of reach of children and pets. This medication should not be stored in bathroom.
