Precose Information

Precose (Acarbose) is used treat type 2 diabetes, which can be used in combination with insulin or other diabetes medicines. Acarbose is an antidiabetic medication. It works by slowing the breakdown and absorption of carbohydrates in the intestines. This effect lessens the rate of blood sugar rise after a meal.

Some common side effects of Precose may include:

• Stomach discomfort;

• Gas;

• Bloating;

• Mild diarrhea; or

• Mild rash or itching

You should not take Precose if you are allergic to it or if you have inflammatory bowel disease, an ulcer, or blockage in the intestines, or cirrhosis of the liver Do not use this medication if you are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history, and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. Avoid alcohol while on this medication, as it can lower your blood sugar too much.
This medication is not expected to harm an unborn baby in pregnancy, but it isn’t known how it affects a nursing infant. You should not breastfeed while on this medication. Precose is not approved for anyone younger than 18 years old.
