What Dosages and Forms Are Prolixin Available in?

The generic Fluphenazine is available in the strength of 1 mg, 2 mg, and 5 mg tablets.

What is Prolixin Used for?

Prolixin (Fluphenazine) is a prescription medication used to treat schizophrenia and associated symptoms of psychosis, including hallucinations, delusions, and aggression. The active substance in Prolixin is Fluphenazine. Fluphenazine belongs to the class of medication called 1st Generation Antipsychotics (Phenothiazines). It works by restoring the brain's balance of natural chemicals (dopamine). It also inhibits postsynaptic mesolimbic dopaminergic receptors in the brain, depresses the release of hypothalamic and hypophyseal hormones, and is believed to depress the reticular activating system, thus affecting basal metabolism, body temperature, wakefulness, vasomotor tone, and emesis.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Prolixin?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Changes in the menstrual period, such as amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea;
• Erectile dysfunction and reduced libido;
• Nausea and vomiting;
• Weight gain

Stop using Prolixin and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Extrapyramidal symptoms such as dystonia, muscle weakness, parkinsonism, and tardive dyskinesia;
• Painful urination;
• Restlessness, anxiety, and agitation;
• Severe constipation;
• Worsening eyesight

This is not a complete list of the adverse effect of Prolixin. Kindly contact your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or worsen.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Prolixin?

Before using fluphenazine decanoate, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or other phenothiazines (such as chlorpromazine and perphenazine) or if you have any other allergies. Prolixin is a tablet and should be taken orally with a cup of water. Follow your doctor's prescription carefully and use it as directed. Your doctor may start you on a low-dose Prolixin tablet, depending on the nature of your condition. Do not smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol while treating schizophrenia with Prolixin medication. Drinking alcohol while taking Fluphenazine could make you feel drowsy. If you feel dizzy after taking this medication, you should rest and avoid strenuous activities until you are certain you can do it. Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens.

You should not take Prolixin and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Comatose or severely depressed state;
• Eye problems, including cataracts or glaucoma;
• History of subcortical brain damage;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Seizure disorders (epilepsy or recurrent convulsion)

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Fluphenazine may cause problems in newborns following delivery if taken during pregnancy. It would be best to discuss this with your doctor before taking any medication during pregnancy, especially antipsychotics. Prolixin may pass into breast milk and have an adverse effect on the nursing baby. Contact your doctor before breastfeeding your child.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Prolixin and other medications, such as:
• Amisulpride;
• Disopyramide;
• Fezolinetant;
Indapamide;
• Metrizamide;
• Pentamidine;
• Pimozide;
• Procainamide;
• Quinidine
