What is Reglan Used for?

Reglan (Metoclopramide) is a prescription medicine used to treat stomach and oesophagal problems. It is also a common drug used to treat and prevent nausea and vomiting, to help with emptying of the stomach in people with delayed stomach emptying and to help with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The active ingredient in Reglan is Metoclopramide. Metoclopramide belongs to the class of medicine called antiemetic agents, prokinetics. It works by blocking the dopamine receptors (at high doses) and serotonin receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of CNS; it increases upper GI motility but not secretions and increases lower oesophagal sphincter tone. This helps reduce feelings of sickness (nausea) and helps stop vomiting.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Reglan?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Dizziness;
• Fatigue;

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Reglan?

Before taking this medication, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Metoclopramide or have other problems. Metoclopramide is a tablet and should be taken with a cup of water. It is crucial to continue taking this medication exactly as your doctor prescribes. Metoclopramide may cause a severe movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia. Do not take more than your prescribed dose or longer than recommended. Do not use metoclopramide products for longer than 12 weeks. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of this medication. Consult your doctor immediately if you develop any unusual uncontrolled movements (especially of the face, mouth, tongue, arms or legs). There is no treatment for tardive dyskinesia, but the symptoms may sometimes lessen or stop once Metoclopramide is stopped. Do not stop this medication suddenly because you might develop withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor may lower your dose gradually before stopping it.

You should not take Reglan and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Breast cancer;

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant or breastfeed a child. It is unknown whether Metoclopramide is harmful during pregnancy or passes into breast milk while breastfeeding a child. Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of using this medication.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. There may be a drug interaction between Reglan and other drugs such as:
• Apomorphine;
• Clozapine;
Digoxin;
• Lurasidone;
• Olanzapine;
• Ziprasidone
