    What is Rilutek used for?


    Rilutek is a treatment for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease. It works by decreasing the body’s glutamate levels (an amino acid that affects nerves connecting your brain and muscles). Patients who suffer from ALS may have very high levels of glutamate, which lead to nerve cell damage.

    Rilutek is not a cure for ALS, but it may delay its progression and prolong life.

    What are the Possible Side Effects of Rilutek?


    Most medications will come with side effects. Before deciding if Rilutek are right for you, take a closer look at what you might expect.

    Here are some of the most common side effects that come with taking Rilutek:
    • Dizziness;
    • Spinning sensation;
    • Weakness;
    • Drowsiness;
    • Stomach pain;
    • Nausea;
    • Vomiting;
    • Loss of appetite;
    • Diarrhea;
    • Numbness or tingling around your mouth

    Contact your doctor immediately and ask them if you should stop taking Rilutek, especially if you experience any of the following side effects:
    • Sudden chest pain or discomfort;
    • Wheezing;
    • Dry cough or hack;
    • Feeling short of breath;
    • Cough with mucus;

    Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions of Rilutek?


    You should not use Rilutek if you’re allergic to riluzole.

    • Liver disease

    Rizole can cause liver problems in women, older adults, and those with a history of liver disease. It can also cause liver problems when interacting with other medications that are harmful to the liver.

    • Liver damaging medications
    o Antibiotics
    o Antifungal medication
    o Antiviral medication or HIV/AIDS medicine
    o Birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy
    o Pain or arthritis medications
    o Anticonvulsants
    o “Statin” cholesterol-lowering medications
    • Medications containing caffeine (Excedrin)

    Be sure to talk to your doctor if you are using the above medication, and those you start or stop while on Rilutek.

    Rilutek Storage and Safety Information


    Store Rilutek at room temperature away from extreme heat and moisture.

    Avoid drinking alcohol while on Rilutek, as it can increase your risk of liver damage when combined with this medication.

    Avoid drinking tea, coffee, cola, or using other products with caffeine, as it can cause too much of this medication to build up in the body.

    Avoid smoking while on Rilutek because it may make the medication less effective.

    Rilutek may impair your reactions and thinking. Do not do anything that requires alertness until you know how the medication affects you.

    Seek emergency help or call Poison Control at 1-800-463-5060 immediately if you suspect an overdose.
