What is Rofact Used for?

Rofact (Rifampin) is a prescription medication used to treat tuberculosis and other bacterial infections, including meningitis, leprosy, legionnaire disease, brucellosis, and severe staphylococcal infections. The active ingredient in Rofact is Rifampin. Rifampin belongs to a class of drugs known as an antitubercular agent (rifamycin antibiotic). It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It will not work for viral infections (such as the common cold or flu). You should not use an antibiotic when it is unnecessary because it can cause it to not work for future infections (antibiotic resistance).

What are the Possible Side Effects of Rofact?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Chest pain;
• Headache;
• Loss of appetite;
• Nausea;
• Stomach aches;
• Vomiting

Stop using Rofact and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Difficulty with breathing;
• Mental or mood changes such as confusion;
• Muscular weakness and pain;
• Sudden fall or syncopal attack;
• Worsening of condition

This is not a complete list of the adverse effect of Rofact. Kindly reach out to your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or get worse.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Rofact?

Before using the Rofact capsule, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, other rifamycins (such as rifabutin), or any other allergies. Rofact is a capsule and should be taken with a cup of water. It is typically used twice a day. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. You should use the Rofact capsule according to your doctor's prescription. Rifampicin can cause your urine to turn orange or reddish colour. This is completely harmless, and you should not worry about it. Avoid alcoholic beverages while using this medication. Rifampin may cause live bacterial vaccines (such as typhoid) to fail. It would be best not to miss your clinic and regular checkup. Inform your doctor if you experience sudden difficulty with breathing or no improvement in your condition.

You should not take Rofact and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• An inherited blood disorder such as porphyria;
• Diabetes mellitus;
• HIV infection;
• Liver problems (such as hepatitis)

You should inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is recommended not to use Rifampin during pregnancy unless a doctor prescribes it. Rofact should not be used during the last few weeks of pregnancy because it increases the risk of bleeding in both mother and child. Tell your doctor right away if you notice any bleeding in your newborn. Rifampin passes into breast milk but is unlikely to harm your baby. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Rofact and other drugs, such as:
• Artemether/lumefantrine (antimalaria);
• Cabotegravir;
• Cariprazine;
• Lumefantrine;
Lurasidone;
• Voriconazole
