Silenor (Doxepin) is a prescription medication that is used to treat insomnia in people who have trouble staying asleep. Doxepin belongs to a class of drugs known as tricyclic antidepressants. It is unknown how this medication improves sleep; it may be by blocking histamine receptors. Silenor is taken by mouth at night within 30 minutes before bedtime on an empty stomach.

The common side effects may include drowsiness and nausea. The serious side effects may include:
• Eye pain, swelling or redness;
• Trouble breathing;
• Vision changes;
• Widened pupils

Silenor may increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults (18 to 24 years of age) with major depressive disorder (MDD) and other psychiatric disorders. Silenor should not be used in pediatric patients. Silenor may cause confusion and over sedation in elderly patients.

Silenor should be stored at room temperature away from light and moisture and out of reach of children and pets. Do not store Silenor in the bathroom.
