The generic Empagliflozin/Metformin Hydrochloride is available as 12.5 mg/1000 mg extended-release tablets.

What is Synjardy XR Used for?

Synjardy XR (Empagliflozin/Metformin Hydrochloride) is a prescription medication used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It also reduces the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. Synjardy XR combines two medications with complementary actions on blood sugar. The active ingredients in Synjardy XR are Empagliflozin and Metformin Hydrochloride. Empagliflozin belongs to a class of drugs called sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, which work by blocking glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, allowing excess sugar to be excreted in the urine. Metformin Hydrochloride belongs to a class of drugs called biguanides, which work by decreasing glucose production in the liver, reducing intestinal glucose absorption, and improving the body’s sensitivity to insulin.

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Decreased appetite;
• Female genital yeast infections (vaginal itching or discharge);

Are there any precautions or drug interactions for Synjardy XR?

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Synjardy XR or have other problems when using Synjardy XR. It is crucial to continue using this medication exactly as your doctor prescribes. Synjardy XR is available as an extended-release tablet. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not split, crush, dissolve, or chew it. Take it once daily with a meal, in the morning. This medication carries a boxed warning for lactic acidosis, a rare but serious build-up of lactic acid in the blood; the risk is higher in people with kidney or liver problems, heart failure, dehydration, excessive alcohol use, or those aged 65 and older. Tell your doctor if you are scheduled for surgery or an imaging test that uses injectable contrast dye, as Synjardy XR may need to be temporarily stopped.

You should not use Synjardy XR and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• A history of urinary tract or genital infections.
• Liver disease;
• Metabolic acidosis;
• Moderate to severe kidney disease. Synjardy XR is contraindicated in patients on dialysis or with eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m2;
• Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis;

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Synjardy XR is not recommended during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, as it may affect fetal kidney development. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, as it is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk. Do not use Synjardy XR in children without talking to your doctor. The safety and effectiveness of Synjardy XR in patients under 18 years of age have not been established.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs’ actions. There may be a drug interaction between Synjardy XR and diuretics, insulin, sulfonylureas, and iodinated contrast agents used for imaging tests. Drinking alcohol while taking Synjardy XR may increase the risk of lactic acidosis or low blood sugar.
