What Is Tasmar Used For?


The medication Tasmar (tolcapone) is used for the treatment of Parkinson ’s disease along with the medicine levodopa (as levodopa/benserazide or levodopa/carbidopa). This medication is used when all other alternative medicines have failed to stabilize your Parkinson ’s disease. A natural enzyme in the body, called COMT breaks down levodopa. Tasmar blocks this enzyme and thus slows down the breakdown of levodopa.

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Tasmar?


The most common side effects of Tasmar include involuntary movements, nausea, decreased appetite, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, sleep problems such as sleepiness, light-headedness while standing, mental confusion, hallucinations, movement disorders with involuntary muscle spasms, excessive dreaming, chest pain, constipation, pain in the upper part of stomach, vomiting, dry mouth, fainting, increased sweating, influenza-like symptoms, reduced voluntary and involuntary movements, infection of upper respiratory tract, increase of specific liver enzymes, urine discoloration. Some of the rare side effects include liver injury, severe symptoms of muscle stiffening, fever, mental confusion, impulse control disorders such as strong impulse to gamble excessively altered or increased sexual interest and behavior, uncontrolled shopping or spending, eating large amounts of food in short period of time. Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Tasmar?


Inform your doctor if you or your family member notice the development of any urges or cravings in your behavior that are unusual for you or you cannot resist the impulse, drive or temptation to carry out certain activities that could harm you or others. These are known as impulse control disorders and include can include addictive gambling, excessive eating or spending, an abnormally high sex drive or a preoccupation with an increase in sexual thoughts or feelings. Your doctor may need to review your treatment. You should only receive Tasmar if your Parkinson’s disease is not adequately controlled by the use of other therapies. In addition, your doctor will stop Tasmar treatment if after 3 weeks you do not improve enough to justify the risks of continuing treatment.

This medication can lead to NMS (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome) with symptoms such as severe muscle stiffness, jerking movements of muscles, arms or legs, and soreness of muscles, muscle injury sometimes causing dark urine, high fever, and mental confusion. To reduce the risk of Tasmar, you should not use Tasmar if your doctor says you have severe involuntary movement or a previous illness that may have been NMS. While receiving treatment, if you develop any symptoms as described above, that you think may be NMS, you should report them to your doctor immediately. Do not stop Tasmar or any other Parkinson’s medications without telling your doctor as this may increase the risk of NMS.

Parkinson ‘s Disease may affect your ability to drive a car or operate machinery. Discuss with your doctor about driving or use of machinery. Moreover, Tasmar can lead to excessive drowsiness and sudden sleep onsets. Hence you should not drive or operate machines, until such recurrent episodes and excessive drowsiness has resolved.

This medication contains lactose. If you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medication.

Do not take Tasmar, if you:

• Are allergic to tolcapone or any other ingredients present in the medication

• Have liver disease or increased liver enzymes

• Have severe involuntary movements

• Have a previous history of severe symptoms of muscle stiffening, fever, mental confusion (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) Symptom Complex)

• Have damage to skeletal muscle tissue (non-traumatic Rhabdomyolysis

• Have a special type of tumor in the adrenal medulla (Phaeochromocytoma)

• Take a certain medication to treat depression and anxiety, called non-selective monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors

Before taking Tasmar, inform your doctor if you:

• Have any illness other than Parkinson’s Disease

• Are allergic to any medicines, food or dyes

• Are taking or have taken any other medicines including prescription and over the counter medications

• Are pregnant or breastfeeding. You must tell your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant. Your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits of taking Tasmar during pregnancy. The effects of Tasmar have not been studied in infants. You should not breastfeed your infant during treatment with Tasmar.

This medication is not recommended for children and adolescents below 18 years of age due to lack of data on safety and efficacy.

Drug interactions


You should always tell your health care professional about any medications that you have been taking or are going to take including prescription and non-prescription drugs, vitamins and herbal supplements. Some of the medications that can interact with Tasmar include:

• Antidepressants such as fluoxetine

• Alpha-methyldopa (used to treat increased blood pressure)

• Apomorphine (used for Parkinson’s disease)

• Anticoagulants of the warfarin-type (that prevent blood clotting). In this case, your doctor may perform regular blood tests to monitor how easily your blood clots.
If you go to the hospital or if you are prescribed a new medicine, you must tell your doctor that you are taking Tasmar.

Tasmar Storage and Safety Information


Tasmar should be stored at a temperature between 20-25°C, in tight containers. Keep the medication out of sight and reach of children.
