What is Taxotere used for?


Taxotere is used as or for the adjuvant treatment of patients with operable node-positive breast cancer in combination with doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide. It is also used alone or with doxorubicin for the treatment of advanced metastatic breast cancer and in combination with capecitabine for treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. It is used along with prednisone for treatment of prostate cancer and head and neck cancer. Every cell in the body contains a supporting structure (skeleton). If this skeleton is damaged, the cells cannot grow or reproduce. Taxotere makes the skeleton unnaturally stiff due to which cancer cells cannot grow or reproduce. Taxotere is usually given as a 1-hour intravenous injection dose every 21 days. Your doctor may prescribe Taxotere alone or in combination with other anti-cancer drugs. Every time you take this medication, you will be asked to take some premedication to reduce the fluid retention you may experience during the treatment. Your doctor may also decide to give you other medications to reduce the risk of infection.
