What is Trelstar Used for?

Trelstar (Triptorelin Pamoate Vial) is a prescription medication used to treat advanced prostate cancer. Most types of prostate cancer need the hormone testosterone to grow and spread. The active ingredient in Trelstar is Triptorelin Pamoate. Triptorelin Pamoate belongs to the class of medication called gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists. It works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes, which helps to stop the growth and spread of prostate cancer. This effect helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful and difficult urination. Trelstar does not cure prostate cancer.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Trelstar?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:

Stop using Trelstar and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Trelstar?

Before using triptorelin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, other LHRH-type drugs (such as leuprolide), or any other allergies. Trelstar is an extended-release (long-acting) suspension and should be administered intramuscularly. An injection of 11.25 mg of Trelstar is given by a doctor, usually once every 12 weeks. Follow your prescription label carefully, and do not miss your medication when it is due. Trelstar is meant to be used as a long-term treatment to help reduce prostate cancer symptoms and improve your quality of life. During the first few weeks of treatment, your testosterone level will increase before it decreases. This is a normal response by your body to this drug. It would be best to know that Trelstar may impair fertility. Discuss with your doctor if this is a concern for you. Speak to your doctor if you experience a serious side effect such as hot flushes or injection site pain. Talk to your doctor if there is no significant improvement in your condition.

You should not take Trelstar and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Broken bone or osteoporosis;
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Heart diseases such as long QT syndrome or uncontrolled hypertension;
• Hypercholesterinemia;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including non-alcoholic liver disease);
• Mental or mood disorders such as depression

Trelstar is not for use by women or those planning to get pregnant or breastfeeding a child. Trelstar medication can cause fetal harm given to pregnant women. Expected hormonal changes that occur with Trelstar treatment increase the risk of pregnancy loss. It is unknown if Trelstar passes into breastmilk or is harmful to the child. Your doctor decided to either discontinue breastfeeding or discontinue the drug while breastfeeding.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Trelstar and other drugs, such as:
• Amiodarone;
• Anagrelide;
• Dofetilide
