What is Trimethoprim Used for?

Trimethoprim (Trimethoprim) is a prescription medicine used to treat and prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs), including bladder infection (cystitis) caused by certain types of bacteria. It is also used to treat other types of infections, such as chest infections (pneumonia) and travelers’ diarrhea. The active ingredient is Trimethoprim and belongs to the class of medications called Sulfonamides antibiotics. It works by inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase, thereby blocking production of tetrahydrofolic acid from dihydrofolic acid. By this mechanism of action, trimethoprim stops bacteria from being able to make a chemical (folic acid) that's needed for them to grow and survive. It would be best to know that antibiotics such as Trimethoprim only works against bacterial infection and does not work for viral infection or cold flu.

Before taking this medication, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Trimethoprim, or have other problems when taking Trimethoprim. Trimethoprim is a tablet and it should be taken orally with or without food. Swallow trimethoprim tablets whole with a drink of water. Do not chew or break them. Your dosage depends on the nature and severity of the disease condition you are treating. It is often recommended to use 200mg twice a day if you are treating urinary tract infections (UTIs) is 200 mg twice a day. And your doctor may prescribe a single dose of Trimethoprim (100 mg) for cystitis that comes on after having sex. Do not use antibiotic without an actual bacterial infection so as to prevent the bacteria from developing resistance. Inform your doctor if there is no improvement in your condition.

You should not take Trimethoprim and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:

Trimethoprim passes into breast milk in small amounts and is unlikely to cause side effects in your baby. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. There may be a drug interaction between Trimethoprim and other drugs such as:
• Amiodarone;
• Apalutamide;
• Fondaparinux;
