What is Xyloproct Used for?

Xyloproct (Lidocaine/Hydrocortisone Acetate) is a prescription medication used to relieve pain and discomfort of hemorrhoids (piles), itching, cracking, or tearing of the anus, and inflammation of the rectum and anus (back passage). Xyloproct is a combination of a local anesthetic and an anti-inflammatory medicine. The active ingredients in Xyloproct are Lidocaine and Hydrocortisone Acetate. Lidocaine belongs to a class of drugs called local anesthetics. It works by blocking pain signals to the brain, resulting in a total stop of pain or partial loss of feeling. Hydrocortisone acetate belongs to a class of medications also known as corticosteroids. It works by activating natural substances in the skin to reduce swelling, redness, and itching.

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Bleeding through the anus;
• Redness or itching where the ointment contacts the skin;

Stop using Xyloproct and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Allergic reactions such as severe itching, hives, or rash on skin and swelling of face, lips, or tongue;

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Xyloproct?

Before taking this medication, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Xyloproct or have other problems when taking Xyloproct. Use Xyloproct precisely as prescribed by your doctor. You should feel the effects within a few minutes of applying the ointment. Do not attempt to push the hemorrhoid back in with your hands. Always wash your hands before and after using Xyloproct ointment. Rub the ointment on the affected area several times a day. Your doctor will tell you how much ointment to use and how often. Xyloproct ointment comes with an applicator. Your doctor will tell you if you need to use the applicator. Be careful not to put too much ointment in your anus or treated areas. Xyloproct ointment is for short-term use. Do not use it for more than 7 days unless your doctor tells you so. To help with easy passage of stool, increase your fiber and fluid intake. Drink at least 15 cups (2 liters) of water a day. If the stool is small and hard, it will help bulk up and soften it. Do not strain to pass a stool, as this will damage the lining of the anus. Avoid sitting on the toilet too long, and limit the time to five minutes. Avoid putting off going to the toilet, as this will make you more constipated. Inform your doctor if your hemorrhoid or bleeding through the anus is getting worse.

You should not take Xyloproct and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Intestinal disorders such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Rectal cancer

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits of using Xyloproct ointment during pregnancy. It is not known if Xyloproct is excreted in breast milk. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Do not use Xyloproct in children under 12.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Xyloproct and other drugs, such as:
Amiodarone;
• Topical corticosteroids
