What is Zavesca Used for?

Zavesca (Miglustat) is a prescription medicine used to treat Gaucher disease type 1 in people who cannot receive enzyme replacement therapy. This disease is a condition where the body does not properly break down fatty substance (glucosylceramide) in the body. These fatty substances then build up in some organs and cause problems in the liver, spleen, blood, and bone. Miglustat may improve the condition of your organs. However, it is not a cure for the condition. The active ingredient in Zavesca is Miglustat. Miglustat belongs to a class of drugs called enzyme inhibitors. It works by preventing the body from producing the fatty substance and thus reducing build-up.
