What is Ziana used for?

Ziana (Clindamycin Phosphate/Tretinoin) is a topical medication used to treat severe acne in adults and children over the age of 12. Ziana contains two medications, Clindamycin and Tretinoin. Clindamycin is an antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacteria protein synthesis, preventing the bacteria from growing, replicating, and surviving. Tretinoin is a form of vitamin A that reduces the amount of oil released by oil glands in your skin, helping your skin renew itself more quickly. Use Ziana as your doctor has prescribed it for you. Do not use this medication in larger or smaller amounts, or for longer than recommended. Using more medication or applying it more often than prescribed will not make it work faster, and may increase side effects. Call your doctor if skin irritation becomes severe or if your acne does not improve after several weeks of using this medication.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Ziana?

Common side effects of Ziana include mild skin irritation, dryness, or peeling, mild skin redness, or itching of treated skin. Stop using Ziana and call your doctor immediately if you have severe redness, burning, stinging, or scaling of treated skin areas, or diarrhea that is watery or bloody. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Contact your doctor to discuss side effects in further detail.

Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Ziana?

Avoid getting Ziana in your eyes, mouth, or nose (or in the creases of your nose), or on your lips. If it does get into any of these areas, wash with water. Do not apply Ziana to sunburned, windburned, dry, chapped, irritated, or broken skin.

You should not use Ziana if you:
• Are allergic to clindamycin or tretinoin
• Have inflammation of your intestines
• Have Crohn’s disease
• Have ulcerative colitis
• Have ever had severe diarrhea caused by antibiotic medication
• Are using other skin medications that contain erythromycin
• Are under the age of 12

To make sure Ziana is safe for you, tell your doctor if you:
• Have any allergies
• Have a history of stomach or intestinal disorders
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding

Ziana Drug Interactions

It is unlikely that other medications take orally or intravenously will have an effect on topically applied Ziana, however it is possible. Tell your doctor about any medications and supplements you are currently taking, or have recently taken, in order to reduce the risk of any interactions.

Ziana Storage Information

Store Ziana at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Do not freeze. Keep Ziana out of the reach and sight of children.
