What Dosages and Forms are Zonegran Available in?

The generic Zonisamide is available in the strength of 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg Capsules.

What is Zonegran Used for?

Zonegran (Zonisamide) is a prescription antiepileptic medication that reduces the frequency of seizures or severity in people diagnosed with epilepsy. Zonisamide can be a monotherapy in cases (including absence and myoclonic seizures) where other antiepileptic drugs have failed. Zonisamide is also used to treat partial seizures that may or may not become generalized (tonic-clonic). The active ingredient in Zonegran is Zonisamide. Zonisamide belongs to the class of medication called sulfonamide anticonvulsants. Zonisamide blocks specific pores on the surface of nerve cells called sodium channels and calcium channels. These channels transmit electrical impulses between nerve cells. This mechanism decreases abnormal electrical activity in the brain and reduces the chances of an epileptic fit.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Zonegran?

Zonisamide comes as a capsule to take by mouth. It is usually taken once or twice a day with or without food. To help you remember to take Zonisamide, take it at around the same time daily. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Zonisamide has a half-life of about 100 hours and is excreted from the body through urine and feces. You should not increase your dose without consulting your doctor, as this may worsen your condition. Take Zonisamide exactly as directed. Swallow the capsules whole; do not split, chew, or crush them. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. You should visit your doctor regularly and not miss your clinic schedule because your dose may need to decrease gradually. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.

You should not take Zonegran and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Breathing problem such as asthma, lung cancer, COPD;
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection gall stones);
• Long-term diarrhea, which may cause metabolic imbalance;
• Mental/mood disorders such as depression, schizophrenia

You should inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breastfeed a baby. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. It may harm an unborn baby. You should discuss alternative treatment with your doctor because untreated seizures can harm the pregnant woman and her unborn baby. In addition, Zonisamide passes into breast milk. Discuss with your doctor before breastfeeding your baby.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Zonegran and other drugs such as:
• Carbamazepine;
• Chloramphenicol;
• Itraconazole;
• Isoniazid;
• Ketoconazole;
Metformin;
• Other medications to treat seizures (such as phenobarbital and primidone)
