What is Xenazine used for?


Xenazine is used for the treatment of involuntary movements (chorea) in Huntington’s Disease. The exact mechanism of Xenazine is not known but it is believed to be a reversible depletor of monoamines such as dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, and histamine. However, Xenazine does not cure the involuntary movements and neither treats other symptoms of Huntington’s disease such as problems with thinking or emotions.

Some other side effects of this medication include depression, suicidal thoughts, Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome with high fever, stiff muscles, problems thinking, very fast heartbeat and increased sweating, parkinsonism, restlessness, trouble swallowing, irregular heartbeat, dizziness due to blood pressure changes, and tardive dyskinesia. Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Xenazine?


Xenazine causes sleepiness. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how Xnazine affects you. Drinking alcohol can also increase sleepiness caused by Xenazine.

Do not use Xenazine if you:

• Are allergic to tetrabenazine, or any other ingredients in Xenazine

• Are depressed or have thoughts of suicide

• Have liver problems

• Are taking a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor

• Are taking medications containing reserpine such as Serpalan. If your doctor switches you from reserpine to Xenazine, you must wait at least 20 days after your last dose of reserpine before you start taking Xenazine

Before taking Xenazine, inform your doctor if you:

• Have emotional or mental problems such as depression, nervousness, anxiety, anger, agitation, psychosis, suicidal thoughts

• Have liver problems

• Have any allergies

• Have breast cancer or a history of breast cancer

• Have an unstable heart disease or recently had a heart attack

• Have an irregular heartbeat

• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not known whether Xenazine can affect your unborn baby

• Are breastfeeding. It is not known whether Xenazine passes into breast milk

Drug interactions


It is important to tell your healthcare professional about all other medicines that you have taken recently including any kind of supplements and non-prescription drugs. Do not start any new medications while taking Xenazine without first talking to your doctor.

• Reserpine used to treat psychosis and high blood pressure

• MAO inhibitors such as selegiline used to treat depression
• Orphenadrine, Metoclopramide, Oxomemazine, Carbidopa, Bromperidol, Azelastine

Xenazine Storage and Safety Information


Xenazine medication should be stored at a temperature of 25°C, with excursions permitted to 15°C-30°C. It should be kept out of the reach and sight of children.
