What is Ampyra used for?


Ampyra is a prescription medication and is used to improve walking in adults with multiple sclerosis (MS). It helps to increase the walking speed. The safety and efficacy of Ampyra are not known in children below 18 years of age. Take the medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The usual dose of Ampyra is one tablet two times a day about 12 hours apart. Do not take more than 2 tablets of Ampyra in a 24-hour period. Take Ampyra tablets whole. Do not break, crush, chew or dissolve Ampyra tablets before swallowing. The medication can be taken with or without food.

What Are The Possible Side Effects of Ampyra?


Some of the common side effects of Ampyra include urinary tract infections, trouble sleeping (insomnia), dizziness, headache, nausea, back pain, problems with balance, relapse of multiple sclerosis, irritation in nose and throat, constipation, indigestion, pain in throat. Some of the serious side effects of this medication include serious allergic reaction, shortness of breath, trouble breathing, swelling of throat or tongue, hives and seizures. Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Ampyra?


Ampyra can cause seizures. You could have a seizure even if you never had a seizure before. Your doctor may do a blood test to check how well your kidneys are working, if that is not known before you start taking Ampyra.

Do not take Ampyra if you:

• Are allergic to dalfampridine (4-aminopyridine), or any other ingredients in the medication
• Have ever had a seizure
• Have kidney problems

Before taking Ampyra, inform your doctor if you:
• Have any other medical conditions
• Are taking compounded 4-aminopyridine (fampridine, 4-AP) or other aminopyridine medications
• Are taking other medications, including over the counter drugs such as cimetidine
• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not known whether Ampyra can harm your baby. You and your doctor will decide if you should take Ampyra while you are pregnant
• Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known whether Ampyra passes into breast milk. You and your doctor should decide if you will take Ampyra or breast-feed. You should not do both.
