What Is Fampyra Used For?


The medication Fampyra may help the adults (18 years and above) with multiple sclerosis (MS) to treat walking disability and help them walk better. This medication contains the active ingredient Dalfampridine which belongs to a class of medicines known as potassium channel blockers. The mechanism of action of Fampyra is not completely understood. It is believed to work by blocking the potassium channels, which further helps messages to pass down the damaged nerve.

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Fampyra?


Some patient taking Fampyra may experience seizures including those who have never had seizures before. If you have a seizure, get emergency medical help immediately and stop taking the medication right away. Serious allergic reactions have also been reported in patients taking Fampyra. Some of the common side effects of this medication include urinary tract infection, unsteadiness, dizziness, headache, weakness, tiredness, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, tremors, numbness or tingling of the skin, sore throat, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, constipation, upset stomach, and back pain. Other uncommon side effects of Fampyra include worsening of nerve pain in the face. These are not all the possible side effects of Fampyra. Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Fampyra?


Take only one 10 mg tablet of Fampyra in the morning and one 10 mg tablet in the evening with a gap of 12 hours. You must always leave 12 hours between each tablet. Do not take two tablets at once to make up for a missed dose. Take the tablet whole and do not crush, divide or chew the tablet. Taking more than one tablet at a time, or more often than every 12 hours can lead to an increase in the risk of having a very serious side effect such as a seizure. If you have taken more Fampyra than prescribed, get emergency help immediately. This medicine may make you feel dizzy or unsteady and this may increase the risk of falling. If you use a walking aid, such as a cane, you should continue to use it as needed.

Do not use Fampyra if you:

• Are allergic to dalfampridine or any other ingredients in this medication
• Are taking 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) compounded by your pharmacist
• Have ever had a seizure (also referred to as a fit or convulsion)
• Have kidney problems
• Are taking any other medications containing dalfampridine as this may increase your risk of having serious side effects
• Are taking other medications that can reduce the elimination of Fampyra from your body such as cimetidine and quinidine
• Are taking other medications that are known to cause seizures such as bupropion, tramadol, tapentadol, or preparations used for colon cleansing

This medication should not be used in children under 18 years of age as it has not been studied in this population.

Before using Fampyra, tell your doctor if you:
• Have ever had a seizure, this medication should not be used in patients who have had seizures
• Have a kidney disease. Fampyra should not be used in patients who have kidney problems
• Have heart rhythm or heart conduction problems
• Have a history of nerve pain in the face (known as trigeminal neuralgia)

• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
• Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
• Have any other medical conditions

Drug interactions


You should always tell your health care professional about any medications that you have been taking or are going to take including prescription and non-prescription drugs, vitamins and herbal supplements including. Drugs that may interact with Fampyra include:
• 4-aminopyridine and other medicines containing dalfampridine. Do not take Fampyra if you are taking 4-aminopyridine (4-AP, fampridine) compounded by your pharmacist. These medicines contain the same active ingredient as Fampyra and should be discontinued before starting Fampyra, to reduce the risk of serious side effects.

• Medications that affect your kidneys.
Your doctor will be especially careful if Fampyra is given at the same time as any medicine that may affect your kidney function. Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines such as beta-blockers (carvedilol, pindolol, propranolol), procainamide, metformin, ranitidine, and varenicline
• Cimetidine (an antacid)
• Quinidine (a medication used to treat heart rhythm disorders)

Fampyra Storage and Safety Information


Fampyra should be stored at a room temperature between 15-30 °C. Store the tablets in the original bottle to protect them from light and moisture. Keep the medication out of sight and reach of children.
