Are There Alternative Names for the Brand and Generic Thyroid?

The thyroid is a thyroid disorder medication. This medication comes from Canada and is manufactured by Erfa. The generic form of Thyroid is not available.

What Dosages and Forms is Thyroid available in?

Thyroid is available as tablets in the dosage forms of 30 mg and 125 mg in the packaging of 100 tablets.

What is Thyroid used for?

Thyroid is a combination of hormones that are produced naturally by your thyroid gland to regulate the body’s energy and metabolism. Thyroid is given when the thyroid gland in the body does not produce enough of these hormones on its own. Thyroid is used to treat hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). It is also used to treat or prevent goiter (enlargement of thyroid gland). It is prescribed as a supplemental therapy for replacing a hormone made by our thyroid gland. It is also used for the treatment and prevention of thyroid goiters, such as thyroid nodules, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, multinodular goiter, and in the management of thyroid cancer.

What Are The Possible Side Effects of Thyroid?

Side effects with Thyroid, except those of hyperthyroidism due to overdosage are rare. Excessive dosage of Thyroid can result in a hypermetabolic state in the body. The medication should be discontinued or the dosage should be reduced temporarily if signs and symptoms of overdosage are seen. Symptoms of overdose include changes in appetite, change in menstrual periods, chest pain, diarrhea, fast or irregular heartbeat, fever, hand tremors, headache, irritability, nervousness, leg cramps, shortness of breath, trouble sleeping, vomiting, weight loss, sweating, and sensitivity to heat. Get emergency medical help if you experience any signs and symptoms of overdose or have any signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Less serious side effects may include temporary hair loss (especially in children). These are not all the possible side effects of Thyroid. In case of any unexpected effect, contact your healthcare professional.

Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Thyroid?

Avoid taking medications like cholestyramine or colestipol within 4 hours before or after you take thyroid. Also, avoid taking an antacid within 4 hours before or after taking thyroid as some antacids can make it harder for the body to absorb thyroid.

Do not take Thyroid if you:

• Have Addison’s Disease (where the adrenal glands of the body are damaged and do not produce enough adrenal hormone)
• Have untreated hyperthyroidism
• Have overactive thyroid gland
• Are allergic to active ingredients of Thyroid or its non-medicinal ingredients.

Before taking Thyroid, inform your doctor if you:

• Have any medical problems such as heart disease, angina, chest pain, coronary artery disease or congestive heart failure
• Have diabetes. If you have diabetes, your blood sugar levels might need to be checked regularly.
• Have blood clotting problems. In case you are taking oral anticoagulants, your blood clotting status should be closely monitored by your healthcare professional.
• Have adrenal or pituitary gland problems.

Thyroid is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby, but your dose needs may be different during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medicine. Small amounts of thyroid can pass into breast milk, but this is not expected to harm a nursing baby. However, do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
