What is Besivance Used for?

Besivance ((Besifloxacin) is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of bacterial infection of the eyes (Bacterial Conjunctivitis or pink eye). The active ingredient in Besivance is Besifloxacin. Besivance belongs to a class of drugs called Quinolones (Ophthalmic). It works by inhibiting DNA-gyrase (a topoisomerase) in susceptible organisms, which inhibits cell division, thereby killing the bacteria that cause these eye infections.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Besivance?

Kindly tell your doctor or pharmacist about other medication you are using, including vitamins and herbal supplements and other eye care medicine. Besivance may interact with other drugs, and the other drug also has effects on this medication. Please do not use it in more significant amounts or for longer than recommended. It does not mean your condition will improve faster, and you are at risk of side effects.

The most common side effect of Besivance is eye irritation. Consult your doctor if this gets worse or affect your sight.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Besivance?

Before using Besivance, be honest with your doctor or pharmacist if you are Besifloxacin or react to other medications. To apply eye drops, wash hands first. Do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface to avoid contamination. Do not rinse the dropper. Replace the dropper cap after each use.

Do not wear contact lenses while using this medicine or while you have a bacterial eye infection. Use Besivance eye drops as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop using Besivance ophthalmic suspension without consulting your doctor. Stopping the medication too soon may allow the bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a return of the infection. Tell your doctor right away if your condition does not improve in a few days or if you develop new or worsening eye symptoms (such as discharge, swelling, redness, pain).

Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether Besifloxacin passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use Besivance without telling your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby. Other eye drops, vitamins, herbs or over the counter (OTC) medications you may be taking may interact with prescription Besivance ophthalmic suspension. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. Some drug interactions may even be harmful to your health. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all the medicines or medical conditions you are treating.
