What is Blexten Used for?

Blexten (Bilastine) is an antihistamine medicine. Sneezing, itchy, and runny nose; itchy, red, and watery eyes; skin rash and irritations are among the symptoms of seasonal allergies that persons 12 and older may experience. For persons over the age of 18, Bilastine is also used to treat allergic skin diseases such as chronic hives and itching. It works by inhibiting the activity of histamine, a naturally occurring molecule in the body. Histamine is responsible for many of the symptoms of an allergic response. The effects of Bilastine can be noticed as early as one hour after taking the medication and last for up to 24 hours.

• Itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat);

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Blexten?

If you are allergic to Bilastine or have any other allergies, notify your doctor or pharmacist before taking it. Blexten may contain inactive substances that cause allergic reactions or other problems. For further information, speak with your pharmacist. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history before taking this drug, especially if you have:

• kidney disease

This medication may cause drowsiness in some people. You may become drowsy if you consume alcohol or marijuana (cannabis). Do not drive, operate machinery, or engage in any other activity that requires attentiveness unless you are confident in your ability to do so safely. Consume alcoholic beverages in moderation. Consult your doctor if you consume marijuana (cannabis). Bilastine has been linked to a heart rhythm disorder (QT prolongation). Fast/irregular heartbeat and other symptoms (including severe dizziness and fainting) caused by QT prolongation can be severe (and sometimes deadly) and require immediate medical attention. If you have some medical issues or are taking other drugs that can cause QT prolongation, your risk of QT prolongation may be increased. Before using bilastine, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all of your prescriptions and if you have any of the following problems:

• A few heart problems (heart failure, slow heartbeat, QT prolongation in the EKG)
• There is a history of certain heart diseases in your family (QT prolongation in the EKG, sudden cardiac death)

Low potassium or magnesium levels in the blood can further aggravate QT prolongation. Your risk may rise if you use certain drugs (such as diuretics/"water pills") or have conditions like excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting. If you're not sure how to use Bilastine safely, talk to your doctor. Prescription medicines, non-prescription pharmaceutical drugs, and herbal products should all be disclosed to your doctor or dentist before surgery: the drug's side effects, particularly QT prolongation, may be more severe (see above). Blexten should only be used if necessary during pregnancy. To learn more about the risks and advantages, talk to your doctor. It's unclear whether Bilastine passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before beginning to breastfeed.

Bilastine may interact with one or more of the following substances:

• Amiodarone; for treating heart conditions
• Antipsychotics (such as chlorpromazine, clozapine, haloperidol);
• Asenapine; for treating schizophrenia or bipolar affective disorder
• "Azole" antifungals (e.g., fluconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole);
• Buprenorphine; for treating mild to moderate pain
• Cyclosporine; for treating Rheumatoid arthritis, skin lesions such as Psoriasis
• Diltiazem; for treating severe chest pain, Hypertension, and other heart conditions
• Disopyramide; for treating kidney disease
