What is Cogentin Used for?

Cogentin (Benztropine Mesylate) is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease and tremors caused by other neurological disorders or medications. Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes movement, muscle control, and balance difficulties. The active ingredient in Cogentin is Benztropine Mesylate. Benztropine Mesylate belongs to the class of medication called Anticholinergic. It works by blocking acetylcholine to help to decrease symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease. This mechanism reduces muscle stiffness, sweating, and saliva production and helps improve walking ability in people with Parkinson's disease.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Cogentin?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Abdominal pain;
• Blurred vision;
• Constipation;
• Drowsiness;

Stop using Cogentin and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Cogentin?

Before taking benztropine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or have any other allergies. Cogentin is a tablet and should be taken orally with a cup of water. You should take your medication according to your doctor's prescription, usually 2 to 4 times a day with meals and at bedtime or as a single dose at bedtime. Your doctor may start you at a low dose and increase your dose slowly to find the best dose for you. Do not use more than your prescribed dose, which may worsen your symptoms. You should limit your alcoholic beverages while treating Parkinson's with benztropine. If you are taking an antacid, you should discuss it with your doctor. Do not stop your medication suddenly, as it may worsen your symptoms. Instead, tell your doctor if your condition lasts or gets worse.

You should not take Cogentin and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Enlarged prostate;
• Glaucoma;
• History of depression/suicidal thoughts;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection);
• Stroke

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant, or breastfeeding a child. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
Tell your doctor about all the medicines you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. For example, there may be a drug interaction between Cogentin and other medications such as:
• Antacid;
• Clozapine;
Ketoconazole;
• Olanzapine;
