What is Combantrin Used for?

Combantrin (Pyrantel) can be obtained over the counter with no prescription. It belongs to the anthelmintic class of drugs that are used to treat pinworm, roundworm, and hookworm infections in the intestine. It works by paralyzing the worms to be removed naturally in the stool by the body. Self-treatment for pinworm infections is possible with this drug. Use this medicine only as prescribed by your doctor for other forms of worm infections (such as roundworm and hookworm). Combantrin contains the active component mebendazole, which kills threadworms in a single dose. Mebendazole efficiently blocks the worm's ability to absorb the glucose it needs to survive. The worm loses energy and dies as a result of its inability to absorb glucose. The worm is then transported via the bowels and out of the body.
