What is Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Used for?

Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir (Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir) is a prescription medication used as a complete regimen for the treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection in adults. HIV is a retrovirus that attacks and weakens the immune system by destroying CD4+ T cells, which are crucial for fighting off infections. Without effective treatment, HIV can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). In this severely immunocompromised state, the body becomes vulnerable to opportunistic infections and certain types of cancer. Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir contains 3 active ingredients to fight HIV by stopping it at different stages of its life cycle. Efavirenz belongs to a class of drugs called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs). It works by binding directly to the reverse transcriptase enzyme of HIV-1, preventing the virus from converting its RNA into DNA. Emtricitabine belongs to a class of medications called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). It works by mimicking a natural building block of viral DNA, which enters the viral DNA and causes it to stop growing, preventing the virus from making copies of itself. Tenofovir belongs to a class of drugs called nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NtRTIs). Like NRTIs, it halts viral replication and terminates the viral DNA chain.
