What Dosages and Forms are Kivexa Available in?

The brand Kivexa and its generic Abacavir/Lamivudine are available in the strength of 600 mg/300 mg tablets only.

What is Kivexa Used for?

Kivexa (Abacavir/Lamivudine) is a combined prescription medicine used with at least one other antiviral drug to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in adults and children weighing at least 25 kg. The active ingredients in Kivexa are Abacavir and Lamivudine. Kivexa belongs to the class of drugs called Antiretrovirals (nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs)). Abacavir and Lamivudine interfere with an enzyme called reverse transcriptase (RT), which HIV-infected cells use to make new viruses. Since Abacavir and Lamivudine both inhibit or reduce the activity of this enzyme, Kivexa causes HIV-infected cells to produce fewer viruses. Kindly note that Kivexa does not cure AIDS or kill the virus but delays further damage to the immune system by stopping the production of new viruses. It also increases the CD4 cell count in your blood.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Kivexa?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Abacavir hypersensitivity;
• Diarrhea;
• Hair loss;
• Headache;
• High temperature;
• Joint and muscle pain;
• Lethargy, fatigue, loss of appetite;
• Nausea, vomiting;
• Skin rash (without any other illness);
• Upper abdominal pain

Stop using Kivexa and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Signs of bleeding in the stomach (e.g., bloody, black, or tarry stools, spitting up of blood, vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds);
• Signs of a severe skin reaction, e.g., a rash combined with fever or discomfort, generalized body rash, rapidly spreading rash, blistering and skin peeling;
Signs of pancreatitis, e.g., abdominal pain on the upper left side, back pain, chills, fever, nausea, rapid heartbeat, swollen abdomen;
• Signs of lactic acidosis, e.g., abdominal pain, dizziness, increased breathing rate, unusual tiredness, vomiting;
• Symptoms of allergic hypersensitivity reaction, e.g., fever, rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain;
• Severe tiredness, achiness, or generally feeling ill;

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Kivexa?

You should not take Kivexa if you have ever had an allergic reaction to Abacavir (also included in medicines such as Triumeq, Trizivir, and Ziagen), an allergic reaction to Lamivudine, or any of the other ingredients contained in this medicine. Take the medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop taking the medication without checking with your doctor first. If you stop taking this medication, your HIV infection could get worse. Kivexa tablets do not reduce the risk of passing the infection to others. You will still pass on HIV by sexual activity or by contamination with infected blood. It would be best if you still used proper precautions to prevent this from happening.

You should not take Kivexa and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Are allergic to Abacavir, Lamivudine, or any ingredients of the medication;
• Disease of the pancreas such as pancreatitis;
• Genetic variation known as HLA-B*5701;
• Hepatitis B virus infections;
• Heart attack;
• Hypersensitivity reaction to Abacavir or any medication containing Abacavir;
• Kidney disease;
• Previously taken any other NRTI class medicine;
• Reduced liver function

This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, contact your doctor immediately. Lamivudine and Abacavir pass into breast milk. Women who have HIV infection are cautioned against breastfeeding because of the risk of passing HIV to a baby who does not have the infection. Kindly reach out to your doctor on the choice of feeding your baby. Although both Abacavir and Lamivudine have been used to treat HIV for children above 18 years, the doses of the ingredients in this medication cannot be adjusted. They may not be appropriate for people who weigh less than 25 kg.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements to prevent drug interactions, which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. There may be a drug interaction between Kivexa and other drugs such as:
• Alcohol;
• Atripla for treating HIV;
• Co-trimoxazole; an antibiotic used to treat Pneumocystis, toxoplasmosis (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim);
• Emtricitabine, to treat HIV;
• HIV protease inhibitors (e.g., atazanavir, indinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir);
• Methadone, to treat pain and drug addiction;
• Retinoids, to treat skin conditions;
• Riociguat, to treat pulmonary hypertension;
• Sorbitol-containing medicines (liquids);
• Truvada;
• Ziagen
